Presentation

For my presentation I decided to start with a brief overview of the basic history of the original Wizard of Oz, then after going over my simple time-plan over-viewing the plot of my version with corresponding pictures of the characters (the original version next to my design).

On this slide I talked about how the original book was actually fist published in 1900, and how the more popular film adaptation actually changed quite a lot of the story, but because it's a far more popular and recognisable version I decided to base my adaptation on the newer version.
This was my simple plan, including how much I intended to make, how long it would take and when I hope to be finished.
I started talking about my version of Dorothy here, who was scarred in a fire back in London and forced to move to Kansas to live with her Aunt and Uncle. I chose to make her younger than the film Dorothy as well, like in the original book as it made her more vulnerable.
Dorothy arrived in Oz in the same way as the book and film; vis cyclone, and killed the Witch of the East when she landed.
Like in the film and book the Witch of the North arrives, and I use her as a device to explain the basic premise of Oz. Everyone is immortal except the Witches, and because of this criminals and the such have their souls taken from their body's since they can't die. The bodies are taken to serve in the army of the Witch of the land where they live, and the soul become a Banished. The Banished spend their whole existence trying to build a new body, and most are mad. Most Banished's bodies are made of scrap metal and material they find, although flesh and bone are the best thing to make a body out of, hence Dorothy being in peril. The Witch also tells her to follow the yellow brick road to the Emerald City so the Wizard can send her home. Dorothy is also given two ruby bracelets which belonged to the Witch she killed.
On the way to the road, she meets the Scarecrow, who she makes a cloth fabric body for after he is attacked by fellow banished for his metal. In return he accompanies her as a bodyguard of some sort.
Next they meet the Tin Man, who tags along as well as he is interested.
Finally they meet the Cowardly Lion, who they save from a horde of Banished, and he joins them as well.
When they arrive at the Emerald City Dorothy reveals that she wants to stay in Oz, and she is told by the Wizard that the only way to stay is to kill a Witch and become a Witch yourself.

The three companions also get their bodies back from the army as a reward for making it this far.
The four travel to the land of the West, where the three companions are killed and in her rage Dorothy unlocks the power of the ruby bracelets and kills the Witch.
The Witches of the North and South arrive with the Wizard, and it is explained to Dorothy that she was being used all along, and that she was a Witch the second she killed the Witch of the East (even though she was told accidents didn't count), the Wizard and the two Witches tricked her into coming here and killing the Witch of the West as a Witch killing another Witch must be punished by banishment. Dorothy is then sent back to Kansas and is locked up in a mental asylum.

All in al the presentation went well, I believe I presented well, and I was quite confident as I had a good knowledge of what I wanted to do. My feedback was mostly positive, and a lot of people believed I would get it done on time, I also seemed confident to them, as well as enthusiastic, you could also tell I had put a lot of thought into my project. On the negative side a few people didn't think I could get it finished in time, and my presentation was quite lengthy, as I had to go over the whole plot. Unfortunately if I didn't talk about the plot my presentaion would have been too short as my production only involves writing and illustrating, I can't go into that much detail about my plans and such.

Proposal

Down the Yellow Brick Road

In this project I aim to make an 72 page illustrated short story, I intend to print this out and bind it manually when it’s finished and maybe do some posters as well. The story will be a dark retelling of the popular book and film, The Wizard of OZ; my version will be more based on the film version of the story, which has many subtle differences, mainly the fact that it is shorter and that the silver slippers are changed to ruby slippers. My book will be aimed at 14-19 year olds, and will be roughly 9000 words long; I intend to get this finished by May.

I was inspired to make an illustrated book because since the age of 7 I’ve loved both writing and illustration and I wanted to do something that incorporated them both.

My inspirations for the content came from my love of Alice in Wonderland, I found a game series, American Mcgee’s Alice and it’s sequel Alice Madness Returns. These games are dark twisted versions of Alice in wonderland and they were my main inspiration in making my dark retelling of the Wizard of Oz. I was also inspired by dolls, and how innocent yet creepy they looked; I really wanted to incorporate this into my art for the illustrations.

I intend to write the story in Microsoft Word in college and Open Office at home, as I don’t have the money to buy Word at home. As for the illustrations I intend them to monochromatic it and I intend to draw these digitally as I am more comfortable working on a tablet then on pencil and paper. I’m going to use a program called Paint Tool Sai, a simple program that allows you to blend colours and fully rotate the canvas; I’ll be using this program because I’m used to it, and because photoshop is too slow. I hope to print out each page (text and picture) on A4 cream paper via Photoshop. Then I can sow down the middle of a group of four pages for binding and the book will be A5. I hope to bind the hardback cover in either fake leather or fabric.

My timeplan is very loose as my work relies quite a lot on my temperament, for example if I have an art block I won’t be able to draw for up to three days.

By the 13th of April I intend to have the final draft of the story.

From then I will work solidly on my Illustration until June the first.

Then I will focus on printing and binding, if further research shows more time will be needed I'll start work on binding earlier.

If I have time, I’d like to do some chapter art or some coloured art to print as a poster. I’ll only do this if I have free time though.

To record evidence I intend to make a weekly journal in a separate blog to my main FPM blog. In each entry I will write what I have achieved that week, if I am happy or not with what I have produced and any advice/critiques I have received by peers, teachers, or friends/family. I will also record the results of any Beta testing I do.
